Target Audience:

All physicians and other health care professionals seeking clinical information in family medicine and/or emergency medicine.

This CME is divided into 2 sections

1st section: ACLS for EP

Course Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in providing basic life support (BLS) care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  2. Recognize and manage respiratory arrest
  3. Recognise and manage cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care
  4. Demonstrate effective communication as a leader or member of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
  5. Apply the systematic approach to assessment, evaluation, and management of complex cardiovascular, respiratory, and other emergencies
*You will need to have the pre-requisite of the BLS course.  Dr Mensour is offering the 4 hour BLS course prior to the commencement of the conference for an additional $100CAD.  Please refer to the Extra Courses tab.

2nd Section: Family Medicine

  1. Fatal rashes you should not miss!
    As practitioners, we encounter numerous rashes. Most are benign and chronic. Some are acute but relatively harmless. A few are acutely deadly. Do you know how to pick them out of a hay stack?
  1. Efficient approach to Syncope in the Office
    The symptom of syncope is one of the most frustrating complaint to investigate and often leading to no diagnosis. You can stop pulling out your hair! Come see how the assessment could be done efficient and with joy! This will be a life-changing session.

    Primary headaches are common and benign. But patients present to us with undifferentiated headaches frequently. Are you familiar with those that are fatal? Come and find out how to recognize them quickly.
  1. How to manage hypertensive crisis in your office

Patients often present with chronic hypertension and more infrequently with hypertensive crisis. Most of these crises are very adequately managed as outpatients. Know the why, when, and how of office hypertensive crisis management.

Accreditation for ACLS

The ACLS Course has been certified by the CFPC and is accredited for Mainpro plus credits for 2 credits per hr.  Physicians should only claim credits for the amount of hours they participated in the course.

AAFP members, who complete any live CME/CPD program accredited by the CFFP for prescribed credit, can claim the equivalent amount of AAFP credits.

The total credits for ACLS are 16.

Accreditation for Family Physicians

This conference is designed to provide primary care clinicians with up-to date, evidence based info on commonly encountered Family Practice, Walk in and Emergency Medicine Issues. The discussion based format of the conference will encourage audience participation through dynamic interactive lectures and case based studies. Dr. Mark Mensour and Dr. Vu Tran will present and critically asses’ recent advancements and industry updates in these areas.

The successful completion of this interactive program of diagnosing, treating and prescribing the most effective courses of treatment, will have the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Vu Kiet

Dr. Vu Kiet Tran is an attending physician in the emergency department of the University Health Network, where he is also co-chair of the UHN Annual Emergency Medicine Conference. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Tran also holds two master’s degrees in Health Sciences (MHSc) and in Business Administration (MBA). Dr. Tran completed his residency program in Family Medicine and his additional competence year in Emergency Medicine in Montreal. In 2000, Dr. Tran moved to Toronto. Dr. Tran is also a medical consultant for various private for-profit enterprises with a focus on business development, strategy, marketing, and sales. Because of his interest in business and industries related to healthcare, Dr. Tran is focused on improving patient access to health services and efficient healthcare delivery.

Dr. Mark Mensour

Dr. Mark Mensour is an Associate Professor of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and works in Muskoka Ontario Canada practicing Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesiology. In 2014, he was appointed as Continuing Medical Education Chair for the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) and later migrated to the CPD Director position for CAEP. His research interests are in education, bedside ultrasound and procedural sedation. Specifically end tidal carbon dioxide level measurement during procedural sedation has been an area of interest since the 1990’s.  Academically he has created many courses including Emergency Department Targeted Ultrasound and Evidence Based Resuscitation. Further, he instructs in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.  Recently he has been the lead developer of the CAEP Emergency Medicine Review Course which utilises a flipped classroom approach to education for Emergency Physicians.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. It is designed for healthcare providers and trained first responders who provide care to patients in a wide variety of settings, and teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in pre-hospital and in-facility settings.

This course is a pre-requisite for BLS
